Flynas has marked a new milestone with the recent graduation of 170 pilots. The graduation of the Saudi carrier’s new pilots supports its plans of continuing its fleet and operations expansion.

Among the pilots who graduated over the period of 18 months were 123 who took part in Flynas’ “Future Pilots” program. Also among the graduates were 47 co-pilots who Flynas promoted to the rank of captain. This is in line with the carrier’s objective of achieving a 100 percent rate of Saudi pilots for the pilot position.

Flynas’ “Future Pilots” and “Future Engineers” programs

According to Flynas Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director Bander Almohanna, Flynas is dedicated to empowering Saudi talents. This is possible through the airline’s “Future Pilots” and “Future Engineers” programs.

It was in February 2024 when Flynas opened applications for its “Future Pilots” program. Applicants must pass an English proficiency test and have a minimum total flight time of 240 hours. They must also have a GACA or ICAO-equivalent Multi-Engine Land CPL/IRL pilot certificate. In addition, they should also possess a valid GACA first-class medical certificate. GACA stands for the Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation, while ICAO stands for the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Under the program, Flynas initially aimed for 100 percent Saudis for its co-pilot positions. Eventually, this transitioned to aiming for 100 percent “Saudization” of the pilot roles.

Under the “Future Engineers” program, meanwhile, Flynas aimed to localize the aircraft engineering and maintenance positions, offering these to Saudis.

Growth and expansion plans

Almohanna also spoke about Flynas’ impressive mid-year results, specifically, its 47 percent increase to seven million passengers. Apart from this, the airline also increased its seating capacity by 37 percent.

Flynas operates more than 1,800 flights every week to over 70 domestic and international destinations. All in all, the carrier has transported over 78 million passengers since its launch in 2007.

Recently, in July 2024, Flynas also signed an agreement for an additional 75 A33neo and 15 A330neo aircraft. This marked the largest aircraft deal for aircraft manufacturer, Airbus. These new planes will operate on domestic, regional, and international routes. The A330-900 aircraft, in particular, will feature a two-class configuration, with a capacity of 400 passengers.

New app, more Saudi pilots

In August, meanwhile, the Saudi carrier launched a new mobile application to offer a more flexible booking and travel experience. Flynas first launched its app in 2018. Since then, the application has offered various self-service functionalities, providing greater booking ease and flight customization for passengers. In addition, users can also track flights and share flight details to family and friends.

In the future, Flynas plans to hire over 1,000 Saudi pilots for the next five years. This goes in line with the carrier’s goals of expanding its fleet size to 160 aircraft by 2030.

With all these milestones and initiatives, Flynas will be able to achieve the ambitions of the National Civil Aviation Strategy. In addition, the airline will be able to support the Pilgrim Experience Program and generate thousands of jobs for Saudis.
